When a walk-in fails you have two separate problems on your hands: a broken machine, and thousands of dollars of stock getting warmer every hour. Most refrigeration companies solve the first and leave you to improvise the second.
A technician is dispatched to diagnose and repair the unit. If the fault is not going to clear the same visit — a compressor, a control board, anything that waits on a part — refrigerated storage can be staged at your dock on that same call, so your product moves into a monitored cold space instead of into a bin.

- What the unit is reading now, and what it should be reading
- What kind of unit it is — walk-in, reach-in, rack, case or ice machine
- When you first noticed it, and whether it is still falling
- What is inside, and roughly how much of it
- Whether anything obvious changed — a power blip, a delivery, a door left open
- The site address and who will be there to let a technician in
If you do not know the answers, call anyway. Half of them can be worked out together on the phone, and a few of them occasionally solve the problem without a visit — a tripped breaker or a defrost timer stuck mid-cycle costs you nothing to check while we are on the line.
What Usually Turns Out To Be Wrong
A box that is not holding temperature is a symptom, not a fault. These are the faults behind it that a licensed mechanic is looking for — worth reading while you wait, because two of them you can check yourself.
- Iced-over evaporator coil, or a defrost cycle that has stopped running
- Condenser coil choked with grease or dust and shedding capacity
- Failed evaporator or condenser fan motor
- Refrigerant leak showing up as slow, steady temperature drift
- Failed contactor, relay, thermostat or control board
- Blocked or frozen condensate drain backing water into the box
- Compressor short-cycling, tripping on overload, or dead
- Door seals, closers and hinges letting warm air in faster than the unit can pull it out
Two you can check right now: whether the condenser coil is visibly packed with dust or grease, and whether the door is actually sealing along its whole length. Neither is a repair, but both change what the technician brings.

Do you actually answer at night and on weekends?
The dispatch line is the fastest route to a person, at any hour. Call it rather than emailing if the unit is falling — a written request waits for somebody to read it, and a failing box does not.
How fast can somebody get here?
Ask on the call and you will get a real answer for your address and the time of day, rather than a number written on a website that was never true for every postcode at once. A coordinator confirms the ETA with you before anyone sets off.
What does an emergency call-out cost?
There is a call-out and diagnostic charge, and after-hours work is charged at a higher rate than weekday daytime work — that is standard across the trade. You are told the applicable rate on the call, and nothing beyond diagnosis is carried out until you have approved it. We do not publish a fixed figure because the honest one depends on your equipment, your site and the hour.
What if it cannot be fixed today — a part has to come in?
That is exactly the situation mobile cold storage exists for. A refrigerated trailer can be staged at your dock so your product holds temperature while the repair is completed, instead of you deciding what to throw away. Ask for it on the same call.
Who actually turns up?
Refrigerant work is carried out by 313A-licensed refrigeration mechanics, through a TSSA-registered contractor. Ontario requires that licence for anyone working on a refrigerant circuit, and it is worth asking any company you call — not just us — to confirm it before they touch your equipment.
